Advocating for Reduced Breastfeeding Disparities in Los Angeles County, California

Presented by:

Arissa Palmer, Executive Director, BreastfeedLA
Katie Waters-Smith, Advocacy Chair, BreastfeedLA

California has the most comprehensive laws protecting breastfeeding in the nation. However, even the most comprehensive law is ineffective if it is unknown, inaccessible and not enforced. Knowledge of legal protections and strategies for advocating for one’s legal rights is critical to addressing breastfeeding disparities. When advocates are aware of breastfeeding laws they can better support new parents in meeting their breastfeeding goals.

In this session, we will hear about the comprehensive advocacy toolkit developed by BreastfeedLA for their 2017 Advocacy Day training last August. The innovative, inclusive design of the day-long Advocacy training centered breastfeeding equity concepts and principles, and included skills practice focused on putting advocacy into practice. Webinar participants will learn the design elements of the Advocacy Day training, and explore the components of the comprehensive advocacy toolkit, learning how to utilize it as a model for law and policy development and implementation.
