Prevention Status Reports, from CDC

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention has released the 2013 Prevention Status Reports, highlighting—for all 50 states and the District of Columbia—the status of policies and practices designed to prevent or reduce important public health problems. Promoting evidence-based practices that support breastfeeding in hospitals and birth centers is included under the Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity health topic. The state birth facility score for breastfeeding represents the average score across participating birth facilities in a state, obtained from the Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) survey.

WIC 40th Anniversary, from NWA

The National WIC Association is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the WIC program with a special anniversary website dedicated to shareable anniversary materials, resources, and a calendar of events. The anniversary theme, WIC: Strengthening Families for 40 Years, showcases how the WIC program is one of our country's most important public health programs, and how it has enriched the lives of millions of families over the years. To illustrate what WIC does and how it helps strengthen families, the NWA is spotlighting the four main service elements: nutrition education, healthy food, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals.

Updated Breastfeeding Policy, from APHA

The American Public Health Association has published An Update to A Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding: A Fundamental Public Health Issue. The update to the 2007 policy continues APHA's strong support of breastfeeding and recognizes efforts to increase breastfeeding rates and narrow breastfeeding disparities as fundamental public health issues.

The National Partnership for Women & Families and Childbirth Connection announced that they have joined forces, with Childbirth Connection becoming a core program of the National Partnership. Join NPWF President Debra Ness and Childbirth Connection's Maureen Corry and Carol Sakala on Thursday, January 30, from 2-3 p.m. ET for a tweet chat at hashtag #Listening2Mothers. In response to a civil suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a breastfeeding mom whose employer allegedly failed to accommodate her under the federal "Break Time for Nursing Mothers" law, What To Expect has launched the #WhereIPump social media campaign promoting pumping rooms at work. Share pictures and stories on the WTE Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook pages with hashtag #WhereIPump.

State/Community News

New State Regulations Support Breastfeeding, from NJ

New state regulations adopted in New Jersey require hospitals to be more supportive of mothers who choose to breastfeed, making New Jersey the fourth state to have such regulations. Hospitals are now required to develop and implement written policies and procedures for identifying and supporting the needs of a breastfeeding mother and/or child.

Pregnancy Discrimination Bill, from NJ

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law that protects pregnant workers from discrimination and requires employers to give them reasonable accommodations so that they can stay on the job. Passing nearly unanimously in the state House and Senate, the bill expands the anti-discrimination and anti-retaliation protections of New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD).
