Breastfeeding Public Health Partners Toolkit

The Breastfeeding Public Health Partners (BPHP) are a group of national organizations that collaborate to support national public health priorities to improve the health and overall wellbeing of women, infants, children and families through individual and collective efforts to:

  • positively shift infant and maternity care practices to increase the proportion of infants who are breastfed at levels recommended by leading health organizations;
  • increase the proportion of employers with worksite lactation support programs; reduce the proportion of breastfed newborns receiving early formula supplementation;
  • increase the proportion of live births occurring in facilities that provide recommended care for lactating mothers and infants.

The BPHP organizations engage in networking and collaboration efforts to create tools and products for use by our constituents and the Maternal and Child health field at large.

Communities and States Identifying and Actualizing their Roles in Breastfeeding Support is a toolkit aimed to improve working relationships between State and Local health departments, State, Local, Territorial, Tribal and Cultural Breastfeeding Coalitions, Community-based organizations and stakeholder groups. The purpose of the toolkit is to facilitate partnerships, and opportunities to advance health equity by improving the reach and impact of existing resources and currently-funded investments in breastfeeding support, enhancing our capacity to identify and address inequities in breastfeeding support, and integrate breastfeeding into the broader public health agenda.

On behalf of the Breastfeeding Public Health Partner organizations, we hope this toolkit helps work across sectors, foster strategic relationships with your communities, strengthen the public health infrastructure by building our collective capacity for transformative change.

With ongoing support from the USBC and Breastfeeding Public Health Partner organizations, we hope this toolkit streamline access to valuable resources and success stories at BPHP partner websites, the Breastfeeding Coalitions Directory, and Coalition Group profiles, to support your efforts at the community, state, and national levels. In conjunction with this toolkit, BPHP organizations will facilitate improved state- and community-level connections, and strategic and collaborative national-state partnerships to adapt strategic national policy conversations to the state level.
